 CALL TO ACTION

RESISTANCE & STRUGGLE

WE THE PEOPLE DID NOT CONSENT

It is now clear that George Bush was not elected by the people of the United States but appointed by the Supreme Court. While this appointment is in place, it is in direct conflict with a majority of the voters in this country and in direct opposition to a majority of the legitimately elected Electoral College votes, his presidency is neither legitimate nor accepted. The presidency was stolen by the right wing. The right wing announced after the election that they would never accept a Gore presidency. Jeb Bush would have appointed Republican electors to the Electoral College. The right wing with the Republican Party as its political manifestation neither accepts nor tolerates democracy as the rule of law in this country. As a result, the struggle now is to force the Democratic Party to fight for democracy in this country. Stealing an election as Bush has done in this election is an affront to every thinking person in this country. When African-Americans are denied the franchise by a series of undercounts, intimidations, refusals to count their votes, then that represents an attack on all working people. The media presents the issue as if the disenfranchisement of African-Americans is simply a parochial interest. By refusing to count significant parts of the African-American vote, the Supreme Court of the United States negated the vote of women, trade unionists, and all other national minorities. Over 90% of African-Americans voted for Al Gore. But also, over 60% of women voters preferred, Gore, not Bush. Latino voters chose Gore, not Bush by 63% and Asian voters preferred Gore not Bush by 55%. In other words, it is in the interest of a majority of voters in this country to have all the votes counted in Florida. All of these people were disenfranchised. More importantly, it was an intentional act by the rich right wing of this country. More than any other issue of the last 100 years, this presidential election illustrates that the struggle of African-Americans for liberation is struggle on behalf of all working people. When they demand that their votes be counted, they are, in effect, demanding that the votes of women, Latinos, and Asians be counted. If we had the resources to study the question, I believe that we find a pattern of activity by the right wing to suppress the vote of all poor people. The Supreme Court of the United States provided an important insight into the thinking of right wing ideologues, which is, they do not believe working people have the right to vote unless they agree with them. In other words, unless you accept the Republican ideology of antiunion, misogyny mixed with virulent racism, your vote will not be counted in this country. Al Gore said he did not agree with the Supreme Court's decision, but he accepts it. I do not agree. We do not accept this backward, mean-spirited, antidemocratic philosophy. If the Democratic Party will not fight these people and more importantly, their view of the world, then we should demand that they step aside and allow other people carry on the fight. We must demand that a million voters appear in Washington D.C. protesting the inauguration of an illegitimate President. If not then, then as soon as possible. We cannot, we will not accept his seizure of power in direct opposition to every democratic principle for which this country stands. George Bush is not the legally elected president of this country. Remember that this country is founded on the principle of the consent of the governed and we have not given our consent.

On January 20, there was a demonstration to protest at Bush's inauguration in Washington D.C. Transportation was provided by the International Action Center in Detroit and Ann Arbor.
